Dear Parents:
Welcome to second grade! Here are just some of the wonderful learning experiences that your child will participate in during this first quarter.
Reading:
This quarter, your child will be learning about the comprehension skills of character, plot and setting. They will also be introduced to how to compare and contrast two things using a Venn diagram graphic organizer. Our class will also be focused on the comprehension strategy of making connections. We have been learning how to make text to self connections. We are also working with nonfiction in this first quarter. We are learning about the various features of nonfiction texts, such as the table of contents and glossary. We will also be using nonfiction texts to introduce the comprehension skill of identifying the main idea and finding supporting details. All of these skills and strategies are introduced to the whole class and then practiced at the child’s instructional reading level. Please continue to read nightly with your child. This will give you a chance to review some of these skills at home.
Writing:
Our writing topics this first quarter will focus on a narrative account, which is writing that tells a story or recounts an event. We will be focusing on the writing trait of ideas to help enhance our narrative writing. The ideas trait helps your child write about one specific idea while using interesting details in their writing. We will also be doing grammatical mini lessons on correctly using various types of sentences.
Spelling:
This first quarter, our spelling principles will focus on short vowels, long vowels with CVCe, and beginning and ending consonant blends. Please make sure that your child completes their nightly spelling homework as this will help them study for the spelling test at the end of the week.
Math:
In the first quarter, we will be covering four units. Our four units are
Science & Social Studies:
Science and Social Studies is integrated into our language arts block. We will be covering three units of study in Science this first quarter. The first unit is called Human Characteristics. This unit discusses the five senses, learned behavior and is an introduction to genetics. We discuss how we may or may not look like various family members. Our second unit is called Objects in the Sky. In this unit, we study how the sun appears to move across the sky, how the moon looks slightly different every night and how there are many scattered stars in the sky. This science unit will involve many chances to observe the sky at night as part of a homework project. Our third unit is on the weather and will be discussed throughout the year. We will be learning how to use various weather tools, such as thermometers, rain gauges and anemometers. We will also be discussing various weather patterns that occur throughout the year.
In Social Studies, we are learning about families, and citizenship. We are also incorporating various geography and map skills as well as learning about some historical people, such as Johnny Appleseed and Christopher Columbus.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of all the hard work that your second graders do each day! Thank you for your continued support!
